Prefecture of Thespotias







Crowned by two pine-forested hills, it is a modern town with a bustling port, especially in the summer. There are numerous hotels to serve the traveler. With a population of 9.104 inhabitants, it is the main port of Epirus.It is the capital of the province of Thyamis and the prefecture of Thesprotia. Situated on the Ionian coast, in a deep bay opposite Corfu, south of the mouth of Kalamas river, it is one of the main entrance in Greece from the west. In older times and even when it became capital of the prefecture (1936), it was an insignificant village. In 1944, it was destroyed by the Germans and rebuilt again. Nowadays, with its improved internal road network, it is the main center of the prefecture. It become well known for its frequent ferrying of ships between Greece and Italy.

Important Sites:

  • The ruins of the Turkish castle destroyed by the Venetian F. Morozini, in 1685. The 12 cannons were transferred to Corfu along with other artillery. It is lying in the little wood at the east end of the city.
  • The institution of Sarra, in Kastri village, 10 km northwards.
  • The coastal village of Plataria, 13 km south, with beautiful beach.
  • The monastery of "Panagee" [18th century], with frescoes and mosaics. It was ruined and built again.
  • The tower of Ragiou in Ligia, 13km north-west of Igoumenitsa, on a hill, 3km from Drepano beach. They are the ruins of ancient Torone. There is also a fortified settlement of military style.
