Prefecture of Preveza |
Cape of Acarnania, at the entrance of Ambrakicos gulf. It is the northern end of the forked peninsula of Sterna. This peninsula, as it turns to the north, comes close to the opposite alluvial peninsula of Preveza, so between the two peninsulas there is a narrow passage from where ships enter Ambrakicos gulf. In BC 31, at Actio, occured the conflict of the navies of the Roman emperor Octavios, with Agrippas as commander, and Mark Anthony with Cleopatra, the queen of Egypt. The navy of Octavios won. He dominated at the West and later he took the honorary name of Caesar. The defeat of his opponents was owed to the fact that Cleopatra left untimely with her ships and Mark Anthony made mistake following her, instead of join his navy. The strife, which started after the death of Julius Caesar, in BC 44, for the rule of Rome, ended with the win of Octavios.
