Prefecture of Imathias |
It is a modern town with 19283 inhabitants 25 km to the Northeast of Veria. During the Turkish domination the area was called Roumlouki. It was the place for the Christians. On the contrary, the Turkish element was much more evident in the neighboring Giannitsa. The traditional suit of clothes for the women is distinctive. The impressive head covering looks like a helmet. The women of the area were entitled to it by Alexander the Great, who did that to reward them for their bravery. Alexandria is a quickly developing center of one of the richest areas in Macedonia. |
