Domokos



Prefecture of Fthiotidas







A historical municipality which gets a wonderful view of the Thessalian plain. It used to be a significant economic center during the Turkish domination. In the Greek - Turkish War of 1897 many battles took place there. Greece get back Domokos in 1881. It is 35 km to the north of Lamia.

The sights are:

  • The mediaeval castle built on the site of the ancient citadel. Beside the castle there are the church of Santa Paraskevi, the well-kept Turkish bath and the old arched fountains. There is also a Turkish monument to remind the battle of 1897 which took place there.

  • The Ringing well, an unexplored cave.

  • The Marmara site, where you overlook the Thessalian plain and Meteora.

  • The village of Pournari - 8 km away - which has got the old church of St Serafim. There are also remnants of the ancient town Proerna. The local people call the area the Castle of women (Gynaekocastro).
