The prefecture borders on Fthiotidas prefecture on the north and northeast , on Voeotias prefecture on the east , on Aetoloakarnanias prefecture on the west and faces Corinthian Bay on the south .

HISTORY

Ancient Fokida stretched away as far as the Euboean Bay , Sperhios and Kifissos basins .The first inhabitants were Pelasgi and Fokes . The latters' leader was Fokos , the son of Ortiniona from Corinth or the son of Aeakos from Aegina .

Fokes ,Boeotians ,Ions and Dorians were members of the Amphictyony of Apollo's temple .Fokeis took part in the Trojan War with forty ships .The towns of Pythona , Krissa , Doulida , Yabalin , Lilaea are mentioned by Homer .Most recent towns are Amvryssos , Kirra , Antinirra , Avae , Elatia , Medeon e.t.c.In the Historic Times the 22 Fokean towns were members of a federation .After the first Holly War ( 600 - 590 B.C. ) Fokeis lost their influence on the Oracle and the town of Delphi became independent .They were on Theban's side in the war against Spartans .However , in the battle of Madinia , Fokeis abandoned Thebans .The latter asked their conviction because Fokeis grabbed parts of the Oracle's land .Philip's intervention caused the Fokean towns' defent , and they were totally destroyed by the Third Holy War which broke out because Amphissa's inhabitants had cultivated some of the Oracle's land .Despite Athenian's and Theban's help Fokeis were defeated by Philip in the battle of Heronia .After the Lamian War , Macedonians conquered the entire Fokida .In 278 B.C. they took back the right for the two votes they used to have in the Congress of the Amphyctiony .

Later on , they became members of the Aetolian Confederation . They were destroyed by the Romans and the Congress fell apart .
