The historical and the archaeological interest of the area is focused upon Delfi.The omphalos of the Earth, is situated in a unique site with a wild and imposing greatness.The archaeological site of the oracle was revealed by the excavations of the French Archaeological Academy in 1860.The findings testify to the fact that the area has been inhabited since since 1400 B.C.The history of the ancient town of Delfi is closely related to the oracle and Apollo.Initially, the town of Krissa and the seaport of Kirra dominated over Delfi.In 590 B.C., many Greek towns declared holy war against Krissa, destroyed it whereas the clergy of Delfi took over Delfi , thus , became the center of the Greek towns amphictyony.In 582 B.C. Pythia games , which are held every four years , begun.Delfi were repeatedly destroyed (by Persians in 480 B.C. , by Fokaeis in 355 B.C. , by Galatians in 279 B.C. ) .In 86 B.C. the sanctum was plundered by Sillas and later on many Roman emperors , mostly Nero , took away numerous donations which were transferred in Rome .The end of the Oracle comes in 329 A.C. with the emperor’s Theodosios decree , according to which the ancient religion and worship was forbidden .

The village of Delfi has been characterised as a municipality .It is built near the archaeological site  2,5 km to the Southeast of Ampissa . It has got 2481 inhabitants .The archaeological site is amphitheatrically built ,surrounded by high vertical rocks Faedriades Petres (stones) .

There are also remnants of Appolo’s temple other towns’ treasures. The Athenian treasure is very well kept . Treasures are called the buildings were the donations were kept .Other significant sanctums at Delfi are : the Krini (fountain) of Kastallia Pege, the remnants of the Gymnasium and the remnants of Pronaea Athena.

The ancient Theatre, of 5000 seating capacity, was built in the 4th century.

The Museum, where all the findings at Delfi are found, has got twelve rooms. It includes objects from the Prehistoric to the Roman Times. Such objects are: ceramics, statuettes, sculptures, weapons, made of copper, inscriptions, tools, danations, e.t.c

The house of Aggelos Sikelianos who longed to revive the Delfic Idea and the Delfic Celebrations.

Naxion Sphinx The stadium, of 7000 seatins capacity, is found nearby. There the Pythia Games took place until the times of Herodes Atticos. The stadium was renovated in the 2nd century A.C. Nowaclays, it is beautifully decorated with small statues.
