The prefecture of Drama borders on Bulgaria and on the prefectures of Xanthi, Kavala, Serres. It occupies a mountainous region with dense forests on the frontiers of Macedonia. On the mountains of Drama, more specifically on the mountain of Elatia (an elevation of 1200 km), the red fir tree grows and thrives only in this area. The virgin forest, Frakto, a unique natural monument with rare vegetation including almost all the trees of the European continent, is found in the center of Elatia. A picturesque forestall village (an elevation of 1580 m), built by woodcutters, is also situated in the Elatia forest. The fauna in Drama is rich deer, wild boars, roes, bears and wolves, who live protected in the wood.

History

This prefecture has been inhabited since the Neolithic Era. Some prehistorical settlements have been located in the capital and other towns. During the Archaic Times the inhabitants worshipped Dionysos, Apollo and Hercules. In the ancient times the Dirama settlement used to be on the site of modern Drama. During the Byzantine Times, after the decay of Philipoi, Drama dominated over the area with its powerful castle. Drama and the other Macedonian towns had undergone tough struggles and periods of occupation, from the Turkish domination to the Bulgarian raids and the World Wars.
