History

Methana’s headland was known from the ancient times as being volcanic.Pafsanias reported in his book Triziniaka the explosion of the volcano and the first appearance of hot springs in the beginning of the 3rd century BC. The last explosion of the volcano,which is in Kameni Hora,417m high,occurred in 276 BC.

Methana

The whole headland of Methana is volcanic.However there is enough wildlife in and around the village.The small island St.Anargiri,in front of the port,is green too.The building style of the village has been distorted by the lack of program in the building pattern.There almost 2.057residents.

Sights:

  • There are many sights on the island St.Anargiri.

  • In Throni,behind Vromolimni,there are remains of an ancient fortification ,classical or Hellenistic.

  • Therapeutic Springs;There are many sulphureous,chlorine-natrium and acid springs.These spa are proper for various illnesses such as dermatological,gynecological,neurologig and rheumatism.

Vathi

A seaside settlement,8 km in the west of Methana,with few residents.

 Sights:

  • The ancient Acropolis and parts of a wall from the times of the Peloponnisian War.

  • The crater of the volcano on the hill Kammeni,which has 150m perimeter and 60m depth.

Kalloni

Seaside village with clean water.It is placed 19 km SW of Methana.Its residents’ main occupation is the cultivation of flowers and trees.

Palia Loutra

A small village,14 km NW of Methana.It belongs to the district of Kounoupitsa.In a very short distance from the village and near to the seaside settlement St.Nickolas there are the baths of Pafsanias;unexploited therapeutic springs.

Steno

A wonderful area 5 km SW of Methana-at the most narrow part of the headland.

Sights:

  • Remains of the ancient walls made from the Athenians during the Peloponnisian War.

  • Favieros’castle.
