Mikines

Prefecture of Argolidas

A village with 422 residents, 24klm from Nafplio, built next to the ancient Mikines. The German archaeologist Sliman had discovered this well known ancient city. The findings prove that Mikines, a city of high cultural quality had existed since 3000 BC. It was the most important center of the Acheans. Atreas, Thiestis and Agamemnon had ruled here. The invasion of the Dories had reduced its power and finally it was destroyed by the Argeans between 468 and 463 BC. Since then this area lost its glory but it had still been inhabited until the 10th century AD when its final abandonment started.

The church of the Holy Mother's Assumption is very remarkable.
