History

The island took its name after Myconos, the hero. According to mythology, Herculis used the island to crash the last of the Giants. The first inhabitants were Kares, Phoenixes and Cretans. Ions also settled in the island. In the Historical times there were two towns: Myconos and Panormos. An economic decay came after the Persian Wars. Myconos was successively dominated by the Spartans, Macedonians, Ptolemians, and Romans. In the Middle times, it came under the domination of Gizi brothers. After their death it was dominated by the Venetians and then by the Turks. Myconos gradually turned into a naval power which contributed to the War of Independence of 1821. Mado Maurogenus proved to be the heroine of the War.
