R.U. of Laconia

Aeropolis (it means air-city) probably took its name from Mars (Ares) the ancient deity of war or because it is an area totally unprotected from the winds. It is built in a dry and bare landscape and it is situated at the entrance to Mani. The Manians where descedants of the Laconians, who took refuge in Taygetus mountain when the Slavs attacked them. They were always distinguished for the bravery and the independence spirit that they showed against the conquerors of Morea. They were living in tall towers, a lot of which are preserved in a very good condition. Aeropolis is lying in a distance of 72km from Sparta and it has 988 inhabitants.
