One of the five small towns that the municipality of
Thisvi is parted is Xironomi. It is fifteen minutes distance from Thisvi
and is located in an area full of olives and vineyards between the mountain
Helicon and the Corinthian Gulf, 400meters above the surface of the sea.
The village is very nicely built between various trees a river that passes
through the village. The village has around 200 houses and 700 people that
work in an industry near by. Also some of them are farmers. The olive oil
and the wine that the village produces are considered one of the best of
the area.
Since 1979 the village formed an organization that deals with traditions
and cultural affairs that originate from the area. It also organizes feasts
with dances and lectures and also publishes a local newspaper containing
historical and socio cultural information concerning not only the particular
village but also the whole area of Boiotia. Moreover in 1977 another organization
was formed. It is an organization of the women of the village that organizes
tours and lectures. The village has a private Cultural Museum belonging
to Mr. G Blanos that keeps traditional costumes and other traditional objects,
all parts of the villages’ historical background.
According to Pausanias who visited the village, the village back then was
located a little further away and was called Donakon because of the reeds
that that were on a swamp near by. The findings that we have of that of
that old village are unfortunately not many and now are kept in the museum
of Thebes. Still there is a tower between Xironomi and Aliki that still
stands proud after than at least 2000 years.
The most important myth of the area concerns the river of the village that
it is supposed to be the very river that Narcissus fell and drown not being
able to stand the beauty of his face.
