In the gulf of Dombraina one can find the ancient city of Sife or Tifa, now
days called Aliki. It used to be a prehistoric harbor that played a very important
role during the Mycenaean era. Pausanias wrote that the citizens of Aliki were
the best in naval matters. Also there used to be a person called Tifis son of
Aignias that was the captain of Argo in the Argonaut expedition. Furthermore,
according to mythology Argo was constructed at this very spot. Also according
to the Argonautics of Apollonius Tifis was able to predict storms and find a
clear path guided buy the stars and the Sun.
Tifa used to be a harbor that belonged to the Thespians like the ancient town
Krefsis that is located next to it. In Tifa there used to be a temple dedicated
to Hercules where there used to be a feast once a year. On the right of the
city, up on a hill, dominates the Acropolis of Tifa. It is called Sifon and
it is supposed to be build on the 4th century BC. At the highest spot of the
Acropolis there used to be a very deep well. Its use is not exactly known. The
walls of the castle are cyclopean and continue into the sea. Also ruins of a
shipyard are clearly seen into the sea. In the area of Aliki the famous statue
of Filotera was found. It is now kept in the museum of Thebes. It is made of
marble originating from Thespies. Its height is 1,74m and depicts a mother sitting
on a throne embracing her little child.
Today Aliki is the perfect spot for vacation and relaxation. In its crystal
clear waters dolphins swim a few meters far from the seaside. The houses are
built on the sides of a mountain. This allows them a panoramic view of the
gulf and the trees that are beside it. The ecosystem of Aliki is under protection
of European and Governmental laws. The area produces natural salt with a natural
percentage of Calcium. The area is 110km away from Athens and has traditional
taverns by the sea, which serve fresh fish and lobsters coming from its very
waters.
Aliki is a perfect place for vacations during the summer and for various
other sessions of the year.
