We leave the town of Samos by the Pythagoreio road and pass through
Chora and Koumaradaii. We reach Pyrgos after 25 kilometres.
The village stands in a cool and pleasant spot, near the Amfillysos torrent.

A view of Pyrgos.
At present, the population of Pyrgos is 653, while in 1951, it was 1,480,
in 1961, 1,253, in 1971, 918, and in 1981, 724.
According to tradition, a shepherd came to Samos from the Peloponnese with
his family, found the spot very much to his liking and settled here.

The residents are hospitable, and most of them work on the land. They produce
oil and wine and keep a large number of bees. As a result, you will see lots of shops,
large and small, in the village and along the road which leaves Pyrgos, selling their
first - rate honey, along with aromatic herbs. The colour and taste of the honey are superb.
East of the village, at a spot called Pothitina, a resident found a stone with an
incised inscription from which it was concluded that there had once been a sanctuary on this
spot dedicated to the worship of the demi - god lon.
Today, in and around the village there are various places of entertainment and tavernas,
all of them standing in enchanting spots, amid a riot of green and near crystal - clear running water.
The place called Koutsi is well known for the fact that here you can sit at a restaurant and
enjoy your meal under vast trees, with music provided by the singing of the birds and the rush of the water.
