On the 5th of August Horsef ordered a general assault of the fleet. The battle was terrible. On a very critical
moment the fire of Tsapelis from Hydra attacked a turkish ship but the wind did not help and he failed. But the ship did
not escape. Brave Kanaris accomplished what Tsapelis did not. He set fire exactly when the ship's captain was trying to
get the ship out on land in order to save it. The ship got burnt at once. The powder keg caught fire and the noise was so
loud that the Samian mountains echoed. Wood, sails, canons, turbans and dead bodies all blew up in the air. As these pieces
were falling down, they caused even more destructions to boats and their army. Nobody survived from the turkish ship.
From Kanaris fellow warriors only two were killed, Georgios Tsabralis and Ioannis Mavrogiannis from Asia Minor. They
buried them beside the chapel of Hereon. Their bones are kept by Samians with gratitude and at the memorial of August 6th they
are placed beside Lykourgos' cenotaph.
The same happened to a Tynesian ship from Vatikiotis from Hydra and to another ship from Matrozos from Spetses.
After that Horsef retreated with his entire navy to the island of Kos, where he would meet the Egyptian navy. So, the
sea - battle ended. Samos was saved. The turkish navy was defeated and the Greeks humiliated their enemy at exactly the same
straights, where their ancestors had won the Persians 2,300 years before.
The next day, on the 6th of August, the captains came out on the land and where enthusiastically hailed by people. They
went all together to the church where they thanked God for their salvation. That day the Transfiguration of Jesus was celebrated
and Lykourgos promised to build the temple of Transfiguration on the same spot. He placed a column with the following words inscribed
on it : JESUS SAVED SAMOS ON THE 6TH OF AUGUST. The same words were inscribed on the island's big seal.
The Samians, wishing to express their gratitude to the navy, donated 61,000 piastres to it. Also, they expressed their gratitude
to Lykourgos for his huge services to Samos, by appointing him General Commander of the island during the conference of the 18 Samian
villages. The turkish and the egyptian navy tried to desolate Samos a lot of times but they did not succeed. The sea - battle of Gerontas
and other minor ones forced them to change their plans. They split and left, leaving Samos free.
