The first enemy ships started to hit the Samians and they returned the fire. But while Horsef was distracting
the Samians at this position, he ordered his men to land in Karlovasi considering the place to be unguarded. Many boats
tried to bring men onto the land but they were forced to retreat with man losses by the gunfire of sub - chiliarch Angelinas.
The same happened in Kotsikas with Lachanas. So the day passed.
During the night nobody slept. They were all awake - some of them praying to Jesus, others in their war positions. They
had fires along the whole island coast so that the enemy would believe that not an inch of the island was unguarded.
The next day Topal pasha ordered for two consecutive landings in Karlovasi. The first was started by 28 boats and the
second by 40 boats. They both failed. They turned back without half of the crew.
At that critical moment the other greek fleet turned up, with Sahtouris as the captain. Miaoulis was busy elsewhere. He
was greeted with cannonballs, crosses and flags. When Horsef saw the greek ships, he ordered a general retreat. He did not even
take his boat. He hid behind the small island of Saint Nicholas.
The greek fleet walked into the harbour and killed with cannonballs the Turks who were in Mykali and then proceeded in
front of the Misokampos coast. Eighteen Turkish ships were heading against him. In a war council with Sahtouris and the other
captains they decided not to move the ships from the place, in case the Turks found the place unguarded and try a landing there.
They also decided to use their fire ships only. Meanwhile, 10 more greek ships arrived from Tinos.
