3. Preparations and arrival
of the two fleets.

The Samians were now certain that they would get attacked and they started preparing. New canons were bought. Fortifications were rectified. Thick logs were thrusted into the sea to prevent the landing. Fake canons were set in Lykourgos' fortress in order to intimidate the enemy. The three nautical islands were asked to send their fleets for help. The guards were tripled and they were given orders about defense and reconciliation.

But the Turks were also getting prepared. More than 30,000 men, apart from the navy, had taken places opposite Mykali, thirsty for Christian blood and looting.

On the 27th of July the greek ships came to the harbour of Tigani ; their captain was Androutsos. More were due to arrive. The next morning Hosref's fleet turned up from Eptastadion. The greek fleet went to Patmos in order to have a more benevolent wind.

The elderly, the women and the children went into the caves and up the mountain peaks. Those who could fight resumed their positions.
