Lykourgos first tried to reconcile the people of Samos and get to be recognized as the General Leader of Samos.

After that, he officially started the Revolution on the 8th of May in New Karlovasi. They set as purpose of the Revolution not only the defense of the island but also raiding to the opposite coast for the safety of Christians and the food provisions. He also wanted to distract the Turkish army who would otherwise have gone to the front of main Greece. There were many such raidings during the Revolution. Going towards the inland of Asia Minor, they brought back to the island Christians, animals, food and other valuable loot.
