POPULATION

For the reader who would like to be acquainted with the island, some general information about population and economy of it would illustrate better the municipality.

Today the population of municipality is 478 inhabitants in accordance with the last census of 2001. Generally there is reduce of permanent population and one of the reasons is that opportunities for young people to find a job are not many, so as to move to the capital of the country. There is augmentative tendency of the population especially during summer period, mainly by people whom origin is from the island but they live in the capital.

The traditional occupation of the area population is navigation which is the main economical activity. Today the major percentage of the main population is occupied as officers of the merchant marine. Women in their crushing majority are unemployed.

At Psara occupation in first-born section is low. Agriculture is underdeveloped because of the morphology of the ground, while cattle-raising is satisfactory because of the grazing ground. Traditional product is a kind of cheese they call "mizithra" while on the island there are few trees but plenty of thyme and that's the reason apiculture flourish. Tourism is primarily developed but the last few years there is a small increase.
